The Queens Arms - history

Built in 1870 for Mitchells & Butlers, The Queens Arms was remodelled in 1901, and further altered later into the 20th century. The remodelling work was to the designs of Joseph D. Ward. Built of red brick and painted stone dressings. It also has coloured tile decoration. The pub is on the corner of Newhall Street and Charlotte Street in what is now part of the Jewellery Quarter (originally Hockley).

There is an old sign on top for "Mitchells and Butlers Gold Medal Ales".

From Elkington Electroplating to the Museum of Science & Industry to Newhall Square

This was formerly the Elkington Electropating Works (built in 1838, although most of it demolished in the 1960s). It was built for George Elkington. Meanwhile Alexander Parkes invented the first plastic here during 1840 to 1850, while working at Elkington. The Birmingham Museum of Science & Industry was formerly next to the pub on Newhall Street from 1951 until 1997 at 144 Newhall Street to the left. This was developed into Newhall Square which was completed after about 20 years in 2020. One of the first buildings to go up in the 2000s was the Travelodge hotel along Charlotte Street.
